Beefy Gerard Butler is the acting meat in this thriller which serves up a cold and tough broth of greed, violence and murder.

Veteran Danish director, Kristoffer Nyholm, frames this sturdy and compact morality tale as a tasty Scandinavian noir, and it’s inspired on the real life Flannan Isles mystery of 1900, when three keepers disappeared from their lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

It’s mix of grief, isolation and folk songs make an agreeable change of pace for Butler from his all-action Hollywood persona. And it’s a role which allows him to use his native accent and shows there’s far more to his talent than being a grinning attitude with muscles.

He’s joined by craggy Peter Mullan and the callow Connor Swindells and their close knit dynamic changes in the aftermath of a storm, which drives a mysterious wooden case onto their island, and in its wake come the owners who will stop at nothing to get it back.
